Seton Hall Prep is New Jersey’s oldest Catholic college preparatory school. The Prep's tradition is matched by its commitment to the education of young men by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively and become contributing members of society.
At Seton Hall Prep, students participate in many of the amazing offerings available to them outside of the classroom. This includes 15 sports, more than 70 activities and clubs, a variety of intramurals and a seemingly endless number of service projects.
“To equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ.”
We are saddened to announce the passing of long-time hockey coach, John Warchol. John was named head coach in 1972 and before staying on as an assistant- spending 50 total years with the program. Throughout his tenure on staff at The Prep, Coach Worchol won seven Gordon Cup titles, four Non-Public titles, and three Tournament of Champions titles.
"I am proud to have brought John into the Seton Hall Prep community by hiring him to be our hockey coach 50 years ago," said President Msgr. Michael Kelly '57. "He was an inspirational and caring coach who valued teaching the boys to be fine young men over wins and losses."
Headmaster, Michael Gallo '79 added, "I knew Coach Warchol during my high school days and everyone who played for him had great respect for the man he was and his high moral character. We will miss him dearly."
Athletic Director, Larry Baggitt H'18 said, "John was the backbone of our program and had an unbelievable influence on New Jersey ice hockey. He was a tough and committed man who helped bring the best out of so many of our student-athletes. I am proud to have him as our coach, but equally for his friendship."
Our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Warchol's family and loved ones.
