Here's how it works...

A gift to SHP in your will or revocable trust advances the mission of The Prep and will impact the lives of students and faculty for decades to come!

  1. Include a gift to Seton Hall Prep in your will or trust. (sample language below)
  2. Make your bequest unrestricted or direct it to a specific purpose.
  3. Indicate a specific amount or a percentage of the balance in your remaining estate or trust.
  4. Tell us about your gift so we may steward your gift properly by completing this simple online form. If you would like to print, complete and send a form to us about your planned gift, please download it here: Estate Gift Form and then e-mail your completed form to Advancement@shp.org, or mail it by USPS to Seton Hall Prep  120 Northfield Avenue  West Orange, NJ 07052  Attn: Msgr. Michael Kelly

The benefits of naming Seton Hall Prep in your will or trust:

  • Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime, so it will not alter your current lifestyle in any way.
  • You can modify your gift at anytime to address changing circumstances or needs.
  • Under current tax law, there is no upper limit on the estate tax deduction for your charitable bequests.
  • You can designate your gift for any department, program or fund at SHP that you wish to support!
Please let us know if you have already included SHP in your estate plan or if you are considering doing so. For more information about making a bequest to Seton Hall Preparatory School, please contact Matt Cannizzo '90 at mcannizzo@shp.org or at (973) 736-6861.

Sample Gift Language for your bequest

Residual Gift Language
A residual bequest comes to The Prep after your estate expenses and specific bequests are paid:

"I give and devise to Seton Hall Preparatory School (Tax ID #22-2807217), located in West Orange, NJ, all (or state a percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program)."

Specific Gift Language
Naming Seton Hall Prep as a beneficiary of a specific amount from your estate is easy:

"I give and devise to Seton Hall Preparatory School (Tax ID #22-2807217), located in West Orange, NJ, the sum of $___________ (or asset) to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program)."

Contingent Gift Language
Seton Hall Prep can be named as a contingent beneficiary in your will or personal trust if one or more of your specific bequests cannot be fulfilled:

"If (insert name) is not living at the time of my demise, I give and devise to Seton Hall Preparatory School (Tax ID #22-2807217), located in West Orange, NJ, the sum of $ _______ (or all or a percentage of the residue of my estate) to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program)."

Retirement Plan Beneficiary Language
You may name Seton Hall Prep (Tax ID #22-2807217) as a beneficiary of your IRA or other qualified retirement benefits. Donors should consult with their tax advisor regarding the tax benefits of such gifts.

Naming SHP as the beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan asset such as a 401(k), 403(b), IRA, Keogh or profit-sharing pension plan will accomplish a charitable goal while realizing significant tax savings. It can be costly to pass such assets on to heirs because of heavy tax consequences. By naming SHP as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, the donor maintains complete control over the asset while living, but at the donor's death the plan passes to support SHP free of both estate and income taxes.

Making a charitable gift from your retirement plan is easy and should not cost you any attorney fees. Simply request a change-of-beneficiary form from your plan administrator. When you have finished, please return the form to your plan administrator and notify Seton Hall Prep. We can also assist you with the proper language for your beneficiary designation to SHP.
