Seton Hall Prep honors Black History Month during which the United States celebrates the legacy of Black Americans whose power to lead, to overcome, and to expand the meaning and practice of American democracy has helped our Nation become a more fair and just society (whitehouse.gov).
Established in 1856, Seton Hall Prep remains committed to educating young men of diverse backgrounds. Our mission further emphasizes fostering the spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical growth of our students to meet the challenges of college and adulthood. Our patron saint, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, was also a champion of social justice, sending a contingent of Sisters of Charity from Maryland to New York City to staff orphanages and schools, one of which was St. Vincent de Paul, the first Catholic school for black children in 1817.
This month twice a week our morning prayers will highlight Black Catholic Saints and community leaders who have made a positive impact on our society. Displayed on our campus are signs honoring Black trailblazers to educate and bring awareness to all students. In addition we are running a drive for the Pierre Toussaint Food Pantry in Newark. Lastly, the month of celebration will conclude with a food expo highlighting traditional dishes from various cultures.
