Covid-19 Task Force Working on Contingency Plans for All Scenarios in the 2020-2021 School Year

In addition to adjusting for the remainder of this academic year and planning for all scenarios regarding events for the Class of 2020, the Covid-19 Task Force is also working on contingency plans should a similar situation arise in the future.

First, we will address any curriculum gaps caused by this current phase of remote learning that we began in March as we enter into the new 2020-2021 academic year. Next, we plan to be back on campus in September, however, we will have a plan in place should we enter a future period of remote learning under directives from the CDC and official state agencies. Details of any such plans will be published as soon as we are confident in the viability of the plans and the reliability of information we are given.

All of these scenarios involve faculty development, increased and focused communication, continued use of the portal, Microsoft Teams videoconferencing, and added support for students and families through school counseling. Students will be addressed as to adaptations to the "new normal" when in school and on campus, and what to expect in the event of another period of remote learning. We intend to preserve as much continuity as possible while addressing the safety and health concerns of the whole community.

Remote Learning

Our Current Approach
Remote Learning at SHP utilizes a blended approach using both Microsoft Teams meetings (Microsoft's version of Zoom) and assignment-based learning.  We also emphasize videos and online practice and drill with platforms like Kahn Academy. This is a blending of what is usually called synchronous and asynchronous.  It is especially important to move students toward an asynchronous, independent learning as we are college preparatory.  There is no one-size-fits all solution to this crisis, but we believe we have found the best approach to maintain continuity, minimize conflicts within the family, and adjust to what research shows is the most effective way for teenagers to learn. Students who struggle with this environment receive extra assistance through school counseling, our learning assistance program, and one-on-one teacher communications.
