Pirates Academy Letter

Thank you for registering for Pirates Academy!

My name is Mr. Pete Durning, and, along with Mr. John Merklinger, I will be directing the Pirates Academy program this summer. We hope that you are excited about this experience. Mr. Merklinger and I both graduated from Seton Hall Prep, and we know that The Prep experience is truly special. In fact, about half of our faculty and administrators are SHP Alums!

This summer, we hope to give you a taste of all that The Prep has to offer. Additionally, we will teach critical math topics and the elements of quality essay writing that will help prepare the participants for our Entrance Exam this fall. These lessons will not only help you on the test, but also help hone your math and writing skills for your 8th grade year and beyond.

On Tuesday, June 3rd, at 7 PM, we will have a question-and-answer meeting in the Bayley-Seton auditorium, during which we will discuss logistics and scheduling for Pirates Academy. The meeting is not mandatory, but highly recommended. If you cannot attend, please email me any questions you may have.

Critical Information for Families

Schedule

Aside from Wednesday for the rafting trip, Pirates Academy begins at 8:30 and ends at 2:30. You may drop your son off at SHP as early as 8 AM and you may pick him up as late as 3 PM. Schedule details are below:

*TUESDAY: At 1:50 PM, Mr. Zinsmeister, our Director of Admission, is going to have a Q&A with interested parents about the Admissions process.

**THURSDAY: Pick-up on Thursday will be at the Kelly Athletic Complex at 640 Prospect Avenue. Parents are welcome to arrive at the KAC around 2 pm to walk around the KAC, possibly meet with a coach, or meet your son and go for your own tour around the facility.

***FRIDAY:

- Pirates Academy concludes with a Mass in the Auditorium at 1:45 PM, and parents are welcome. For the parents who attend, we would like your sons to find you when they walk in and sit with you.
- If you cannot attend the mass, you may pick-up at 2:30 PM.
- Any premature departures from Pirates Academy on the last day must take place at11:30 AM. Families will need to email Pete Durning one day in advance.

Lunch & Drink Information
- Students must bring their own lunch and drinks/snacks. Lunch is typically held outside if weather permits or in the SHP Dining Hall.
- Participants must bring a refillable water bottle each day like this one. (It can be smaller than 64 oz.)
Rafting Trip
- If any of the dates below get postponed, we will raft the next day.
- We will cover the details of the trip during Pirates Academy, but here is a link to a description of the trip with a video. You will be required to complete an online waiver form for the week which your son is attending. Please click the appropriate link listed below.
- If your son cannot attend the trip because you cannot get him there, please email Pete Durning at pdurning@shp.org and we will try to arrange something.

Dress Code
- The dress code for each day is casual (t-shirt, casual or athletic shorts, and sneakers), since we will have athletic activity on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. If you do not want to participate in a specific activity, you may sit out, but we would appreciate it if you gave each activity a try.

7. Cancellation Policy

- Cancellations before June 1 will receive a full refund.
- Cancellations after June 1 will receive a 50% refund.
- Cancellations within 5 days of the start of your session of Pirates Academy are not eligible for a refund.
- Please contact Mr. Durning should you need to cancel your registration.
