Seton Hall Prep is New Jersey’s oldest Catholic college preparatory school. The Prep's tradition is matched by its commitment to the education of young men by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively and become contributing members of society.
At Seton Hall Prep, students participate in many of the amazing offerings available to them outside of the classroom. This includes 15 sports, more than 70 activities and clubs, a variety of intramurals and a seemingly endless number of service projects.
“To equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ.”
Mourning the Passing of Retired Teacher & Coach, Mr. John Allen
The Seton Hall Prep community mourns the passing of retired teacher, coach, and mentor, Mr. John Allen (July 13, 1936 - March 16, 2026). Over the course of his long and distinguished career, he dedicated himself to the formation of young men both in the classroom and through athletics. His former students and players will never forget his inspiring quotes and sayings – most often pertaining to self-discipline.
His commitment to the mission of Seton Hall Prep and to the development of our young men will long be remembered by all who had the privilege to learn from him.
John joined the faculty in 1973 as a Mathematics teacher and later served as head football coach from 1988-1994, and head wrestling coach from 1989-2003. Even after retiring from full-time teaching, he continued to serve The Prep community as a tutor, remaining a consistent presence on campus until 2021.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to athletics and education, Mr. Allen was inducted into the Seton Hall Prep Hall of Fame in 2001, the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame, the New Jersey Interscholastic Coaches Hall of Fame, and the New Jersey Sports Hall of Fame. The Seton Hall Prep community extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones while giving thanks for the remarkable life he lived and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
