Seton Hall Prep's AP Art History explore Baroque Age Painting Styles

SHP's AP Art History class - taught by Eddie Mungiello '87 - explored Baroque age painting styles called "premier coup" or "alla prima" (first pass or first blow) that painters like Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt and Velasquez used in order to quickly fulfill commissions.

Mungiello also showed students modern equivalents of the old paints used by the Masters and what they are called today (ie Cadmium yellow for Orpiment, Vermillion hue for true vermillion, warm white for lead white, etc.).

Hands-on demos linked historic pigments to modern paints and traced the shift from studio practice to plein air made possible by new tools and materials, like the collapsible paint tube and the outdoor easel (French easel) so that painters could leave their studios and work in the fields.

While this is a chapter or two ahead in the class investigations, Mungiello says the transition from the studio to the outdoors will make more sense now that they have seen the materials.
