Seton Hall Prep is New Jersey’s oldest Catholic college preparatory school. The Prep's tradition is matched by its commitment to the education of young men by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively and become contributing members of society.
At Seton Hall Prep, students participate in many of the amazing offerings available to them outside of the classroom. This includes 15 sports, more than 70 activities and clubs, a variety of intramurals and a seemingly endless number of service projects.
Educating the whole man includes teaching a true understanding of the importance of service and actually participating in the service of others in need.
Prep Students Support Our Lady of Sorrows STEM Fair
Since 2011 Seton Hall Prep has supported academic growth at West Orange's Hazel Avenue Elementary School and, as time went on, with Gregory Avenue Elementary School, providing weekly tutoring for those schools' students with their homework and self-improvement packages. Most recently, Tutoring Program Director John Pascal has added Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange to the list of schools,...
which now enjoy the tutoring support of 83 Prep students, who work with nearly 90 of the three schools' youngsters. As an outgrowth of the newest relationship, OLS Principal Judy Foley asked for Prep STEM and Robotics students to be judges at the school's 2nd Annual 6th-7th Grade STEM Fair on January 23rd.
Since last September, under the direction of OLS STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, and math) teachers Jennifer Hogan and Matt Ferro, the OLS students worked in eight teams, researching countries challenged by the desperate need for food, clean water, sanitation and affordably clean energy. The young students were tasked to come up with feasible projects that positively impact humans, their local economies, and, by extension, the world. The Prep judges evaluated the projects, posing questions to the OLS’ teams about their informational brochures, engineering notebooks, prototypes, displays, and for evidence of their teamwork. In addition to criteria surrounding science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the 6th- and 7th-graders were challenged to demonstrate an understanding of the country's geography, history, art, economics, culture, climate and religious customs.
Provided by SHP Robotics Team Adviser Minh Trinh and STEM Instructor David Snyder, the 10 Prep judges were: Noah Alonso, Alejandro Echaniz, Bryan Grullon, George Haddad, Slok Jariwala, Jordin Lamothe, Shicong “Tommy” Pan, Daniel Sadek, Christopher Tarabay and Mark Tarazi. The members of the Prep group received highmarks from the OLS staff for their professional approach to their difficult task.
