Pirates Baseball's Winter Games Carnival Hosts an Energized Afternoon for Their Special Needs Guests

Sunday January 12 saw the ninth annual renewal of the baseball program’s Annual Winter Games Carnival for The Prep’s special needs friends. Nearly 100 members of the Pirates highly regarded baseball team were joined by a score of Prep student volunteers in welcoming more than 150 guests for for an afternoon of activities and games in Tracey Gym and the school’s Dining Hall...
The event was spearheaded by senior players Brandon Hersh and Garrett Fitschen, along with Coach Mike Sheppard, Director of Service Learning Vinnie McMahon and members of the team’s coaching staff. A special addition to the day’s program was music provided by Prep Theology teacher Larry Kupferman, whose guitar playing and singing raised the energy level to a fever pitch. The day’s activities were dotted with a number of happy reunions among guests from Camp New Day and the ARC of Essex with Prep players and coaches, as many have attended the team’s fall and winter carnivals and clinics for years.
This event was part of the robust service program adopted by the baseball team, which hosted a baseball clinic for those with physical and cognitive challenges last fall. The team’s long standing service work has spurred a half dozen other teams to become involved in service projects.
