Antonucci, Eidel lead Seton past Par Hills, 41-34
Sunday, February 01, 2004    BY BOB BEHRE  For the Star-Ledger
Mike Antonucci and Tom Eidel were both glaring -- not so admiringly -- at the ceiling lights at the Parsippany Hills gym.
Because each wrestler would battle back from their backs to win, Seton Hall Prep survived for a 41-34 victory over Parsippany Hills yesterday in Parsippany.
It would be a long afternoon for Parsippany Hills (9-3), No. 1 in the Morris County Top 10, which would later lose, 44-20, to Paramus, ranked No. 3 in Bergen County. Parsippany Hills had won nine straight after an opening-day loss to Scotch Plains-Fanwood, No. 18 in The Star-Ledger Top 20.    In the meet's second bout and with his Seton Hall team trailing, 6-0, Antonucci, who was on his back twice, fell behind Parsippany Hills' Justin Becker, 13-2. But late in the second period, Antonucci worked an escape, then took Becker down and rolled him to his back for three near-fall points to draw within 13-8.
Starting on defense, Antonucci reversed Becker in the opening 30 seconds of the third, caught a leg, snapped in a cradle and quickly turned the Parsippany Hills wrestler to his back. Antonucci, assured of three back points that would have tied the bout, finished his opponent off with a fall in 4:57.    Instead of staring at a 12-0 deficit, Seton Hall Prep (10-5), ranked No. 5 in the Essex County Top 10, was now even at 6-6.    "Seeing myself down by that much, I was thinking of the team in that spot," Antonucci said. "I felt I had enough time to come back and pin him."
Though it would build a 35-12 lead through nine bouts, Seton Hall's advantage was hardly secure with a strong group of lightweights on deck for Parsippany Hills.    Jack McNeil gave notice when he pinned Seton Hall's Mike Ryan in 41 seconds at 103 to draw the home team within 35-18. With Parsippany Hills' Matt Dellavecchia (119), Paul Galipeau (125) and Tom Corigliano (130) capable of closing the meet out with consecutive pins, the bout at 112, pitting Eidel and Parsippany Hills' Rik Godhani, carried major significance.
Eidel took Godhani down 15 seconds into the bout and rode him until Godhani finally snuck out for an escape point with :38 left in the first. Godhani then took Eidel down and worked a near-side cradle. Godhani nearly had the pin but the clock ran out on the period and he had to settle for three back points and a 6-2 lead.    "I've been having trouble with the cradle all year," Eidel said. "Because he's a tall kid with long arms, he was able to take advantage of an opening."    Eidel battled back from defense, scoring a reversal early in the second period to draw within 6-4. Then Eidel caught Godhani awkwardly and the Parsippany Hills wrestler twisted his left knee at a grotesque angle.    "I had a single in and I guess I pulled it too hard," Eidel said. After some injury time, Godhani chose to continue.    "At first sight of the injury it looked real bad, but it seemed not to hurt him too much," Parsippany Hills coach Matt Ciampi said.
Eidel regained the lead, 7-6, when he turned Godhani to his back for three near-fall points just before the second period horn sounded. As the two wrestlers scrambled early in the third, Godhani slammed his left foot to the mat, giving his knee another jolt, and could not continue. Eidel's injury default victory at 4:14 gave Seton Hall a 41-18 lead and that clinched the meet.
Dellavecchia and Galipeau did pin their opponents and Corigliano won a 22-9 major decision to forge the final margin, 41-34.    "We stayed level-headed in the match and got the points back when we needed them," said first-year Seton Hall Prep coach Dino DeBellonia, who deferred to advice from his former mentor. "Johnny Allen (former great Seton Hall coach) always said if you think team, you'll do better as an individual."    Ciampi felt his team didn't bring its best to the mat.    "I though we were a little down today," Ciampi said. "Our kids were really pumped up for the Mount Olive and Hanover Park matches, but yesterday and today, we didn't have the same motivation to do well."
Parsippany Hills had defeated Mount Olive and Hanover Park last week to ascend to the top of the Morris County rankings. It survived a criteria victory over Mendham, 28-28, on Friday.
   Seton Hall Prep 41, Parsippany Hills 34 :    135: Knag, P, pinned Flynn, 2:28.    140: Antonucci, S, pinned Becker, 4:57.    145: Decker, S, pinned Kunzel, :28.    152: Czarny, S, dec. Deisem, 8-4.    160: Devincenzo, P, pinned Desrivieres, 1:05.    171: DiLeo, S, pinned Shea, 1:11.    189: DelVecchio, S, dec. Hesse, 16-1 (TF 4:29).    215: Birchler, S, dec. Sims, 4-2.    HWT: D'Amico, S, won by forfeit.
   103: McNeil, P, pinned Ryan, :41.    112: Eidel, S, won by injury default over Godhani, 4:14.    119: Dellavecchia, P, pinned Romanenko, 1:07.    125: Galipeau, P, pinned K. Guznay, :42.    130: Corgiliano, P, dec. S. Guznay, 22-9.    Records: Seton Hall Prep 10-5, Parsippany Hills 9-3.

Seton receives top seed for Essex tournament
Tuesday, January 27, 2004     BY MIKE KINNEY    For the Star-Ledger
After three years of playing bridesmaid, both in the seedings and at the championship game, Seton Hall Prep is back in its more customary home whites for the duration of the Essex County Tournament.
Not surprisingly, Seton Hall, No. 2 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, earned the top seed for the 58th ECT at last night's meeting. It came in ahead of ninth-ranked Montclair at No. 2, 13th-ranked Bloomfield Tech at No. 3 and unranked Irvington at No. 4.
All four receive a bye for the preliminary round, which will be comprised of 12 games this weekend at the court of the higher seed. The tournament was open to all registrants for the first time in a number of years and drew 28 teams.
The first round, also at the higher seed's court, will be played Feb. 7 before moving to Essex County College in Newark for the following three weeks. The championship is set for 3 p.m. Feb. 28.
If history serves Seton Hall, it will be in uniform that day and battling for its 10th ECT crown.
The Prep won four of its last five titles as the No. 1 seed and also fell to the top-seeded team in each of the past three years, East Side last year and in 2002 and Shabazz in 2001.
Seton Hall has grabbed the role of favorite despite a young starting lineup of four juniors and a sophomore. Andrew Pusar, a 6-1 junior shooting guard, Brandon Costner, a 6-9 junior forward, and Chris Andrews, a 5-8 junior point guard, are the leaders for coach Bob Farrell's team.
Montclair, which has won eight straight games, will have several stern tests before it ever gets to the winner of Saturday's preliminary game between Columbia and Bloomfield.
High-scoring senior guard Jordan Fowler, fellow senior guard Landon Glover and sophomore guard Cecil Stinson, have challenging contests this week alone with Teaneck today and No. 3 Don Bosco Prep on Thursday.
Bloomfield Tech, paced by senior guards Courtney Nelson, Da-Shawn Dwight and Jason Wilson, believed correctly that it would lock up the No. 3 seed with a victory Sunday over Blair. Bloomfield Tech impressed with a 68-56 victory.
Though only 7-6, Irvington drew respect for several notable outings in the highly competitive Watchung Conference. Senior forwards Jerrell Wilburn and Shawn Colwell and junior guard Whaheed Dixon pace Irvington.
   PRELIMINARY ROUND SATURDAY 28-Livingston at 5-West Orange. 27-West Side at 6-Newark Academy. 26-Glen Ridge at 7-University. 25-Arts at 8-Weequahic. 24-Millburn at 9-Newark Tech. 23-West Essex at 10-East Orange. 22-Orange at 11-Caldwell. 21-Belleville at 12-East Side. 20-Nutley at 13-Montclair Kimberley. 19-Science at 14-Barringer. 18-Bloomfield at 15-Columbia. 17-Immaculate at 16-Shabazz.

Seton wins Iron Hills Conference Championship
Sunday, January 25, 2004      BY ANDREW BELL For the Star-Ledger
Seton Hall Prep did not have an individual champion win more than one event but rode its depth and numerous personal bests to its seventh straight title at the Iron Hills Conference Championships yesterday in Morristown.
A total of 13 Seton Hall swimmers scored and 22 personal records were set. In the meets first three events, Seton Hall took first in the 200-meter medley relay, 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley.
Sean Hebron won the 200 freestyle in 2:01.49 and Matt Curtis won the 200 IM in 2:13.71.
Joe Scala took second in both the 50 (25.29) and 100 freestyle (55.11) to Andrew DiGiacomo of Parsippany Hills before aiding in a record-breaking performance in the 400 freestyle relay. Scala anchored the team with Jeff McTernan, Curtis and Hebron, which set a meet record in 3:44.36 and also broke the school record. The previous mark of 3:45.10 was set in 1983 by a team that featured 1992 Olympic swimmer Ron Karnaugh, Chris OConnell, Bob Burda and Tim Rathbun.
"We looked at our times before the meet and thought we had a chance to break the record and knew that there werent a lot of opportunities to swim in a meter pool," Scala said. I"t was going to take a great team to break that record and its a tribute to those who came before us as well as ourselves."

No. 1 St. Anthony gains 58-52 victory over No. 2 Seton
Sunday, January 18, 2004     BY MIKE KINNEY
For the Star-Ledger
Bob Hurley won't begin to speculate on the chances of yesterday's game between his St. Anthony team and Seton Hall Prep being a sneak preview of the Tournament of Champions final two months from now.
He'll just enjoy the moment that just passed and let what happens happen.
Or so the veteran coach said after undefeated St. Anthony, No. 1 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, edged No. 2 Seton Hall Prep, 58-52, before a capacity crowd of 2,000 at the Battle on the Boardwalk at Convention Hall in Asbury Park.
"I think people here just witnessed about as good a game as you're going to get at this point in the high school season," Hurley said. "It was a great game and the atmosphere was just terrific."
Senior guard Marcus Williams scored 15 points, junior forward Barney Anderson had 14 and junior guard Sean McCurdy added 13 for a balanced St. Anthony offense.
Seton Hall, which had a six-game winning streak snapped, also spread out its scoring, with junior guard Andrew Pusar hitting for 17 points, junior forward Brandon Costner scoring 14 and sophomore guard Porter Braswell getting 10.
Initially, Seton Hall's ability to strike a healthy balance seemed in doubt. It made just two of its first 10 field-goal attempts and looked uneasy against St. Anthony's ball pressure and quick pace. Seton Hall fell behind, 13-6, with just over two minutes left in the first quarter and was down, 19-10, by period's end.
"At first it was recognition of their pressure," Seton Hall coach Bob Farrell said of his team's early confusion. "But I think we started recognizing the double team and looping somebody into the middle to take it up the court and to the basket. That kept us in contact with them."
Seton Hall's ability to finally break pressure slowed the game to a tempo more to its liking. For one thing, the half-court game spawned the emergence of the 6-8 Costner, who scored eight points in the second quarter after getting just two in the first.
Seton Hall drew to within 23-19 midway in the second after a basket by Costner, then to within 55-52 later in the half on Pusar's runner in the lane.
"Their pressure and doubling were making it lot more difficult for us to find Brandon in the low box," Farrell said. "And it was extremely important for him to get some putbacks and a couple penetration in-bouncers to him. Once that started happening, he started getting into the flow of the game."
Thing was, St. Anthony never really lost its flow long enough for Seton Hall to wrest the lead. The Prep was as close as 49-46 on a layup by Mark Solomon with 5:37 left in the game, but St. Anthony kept its poise.
Even if it didn't look all too cool from the foul line, missing seven of 14 in the fourth quarter and making nine of 19 for the game.
St. Anthony, in fact, missed five straight from the line at one point before Ahmad Mosby sank two for a 53-46 lead with 2:21 to play.
"I know Coach Hurley will get on us about those tomorrow in practice," Williams said. He was just two of six from the line in the second half, yet did fine work of keeping tempo and making big shots in St. Anthony's half-court game.
"The half-court game was clearly to the advantage of Seton Hall," Hurley said. "But it's very important for us to be functioning in half-court sets right now. It's great for us to have to bang it out possession by possession and function in that kind of game."
    ST. ANTHONY (58): Mercer 2-1-0-7, Williams 6-0-3-15, Mosby 3-0-3-9, McCurdy 2-2-3-13, Anderson 7-0-0-14, Beatty 0-0-0-0, Gibbs 0-0-0-0. Totals: 20-3-9-58.
    SETON HALL PREP (52): Pusar 6-0-5-17, Andrews 1-0-2-4, Braswell 3-0-4-10, Costner 6-0-2-14, Harvey 1-0-0-2, Solomon 1-1-0-5, Wujciak 0-0-0-0. Totals: 18-1-13-52.
    St. Anthony (10-0)      19 15 13 11 -- 58
    Seton Hall Prep (9-2)  10 16 15 11 -- 52
