Seton Hall Prep's Porcello signs for $7M
Phenom was Detroit Tigers' first-round pick

AUGUST 14, 2007- DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers and first-round draft pick Rick Porcello reached agreement today on a four-year contract worth $7.28 million. The 6-foot-5 righty from New Jersey pitched for the nation's top-ranked high school team and was among the most touted prospects in the country. Represented by Scott Boras, Porcello was picked No. 27 overall in the June draft. This year, under a new baseball rule, draft picks have until August 15  to agree on deals. After that, they are not eligible to sign.
Before it was officially announced, a person familiar with the deal told the Detroit Free Press that Porcello would get a $3.7-million signing bonus. By receiving a major league contract, Porcello speeds his timetable for reaching the majors. Many teams were believed to pass on Porcello because of his request for a large signing bonus. The Tigers drafted him at No. 27. Had Porcello not signed, he would have pitched for the University of North Carolina.

Well there's some happy news at least as the Tigers have agreed to
terms with Rick Porcello. Porcello of course is the Tigers first round draft choice, who despite being the top high school pitcher in the draft, slid to the Tigers at 27 due to those "signability issues" that Tigers fans have become so fond of.
Porcello is now the Tigers number 2 prospect, right behind Cameron Maybin.
The deal appears to be for something north of $7 million and Baseball America reports that it is a
Major League contract. This is significant, more significant than the money, because it means that Porcello is placed on the 40 man roster immediately. And with that comes an option year this season. But I believe due to his age at time of signing, he'll get a 4th option year meaning that the Tigers won't have to put him on the big league roster until 2011.
As for the money I've seen $7.3 and $7.7 reported but either way it is a record for a high school player and it is way above the "suggested" slotting system that MLB has in place. And of course it is a ton of money for a high school kid who is still a long ways from the bigs, but it's an even longer ways until free agency (6 years of big league service time). So if he gets up and has any measure of success he becomes a bargain compared to replacing that production on the open market.

Porcello's stuff includes a mid 90's fastball and both a slow curve and sharp slider. He also commands a change up.
We'll see if the Tigers announce the signing of 5th round pick Casey Crosby who has reportedly been in the fold for quite some time. But again because the Tigers were going over slot, they were waiting until closer to the deadline to announce. Cale Iorg and Dominic De La Osa are the other remaining Tiger top 10 picks who are unsigned.

On June 22 the West Orange Town Council honored SHP pitcher Rick Porcello as the recipient of the National Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year Award, and the entire Pirates Baseball Team, as the recipients of the #1 ranking in three nationall polls, as well as their 3rd consecutive NJ state championship.
President John Skarbnik presented the Town Council's proclamation to the Prep team, which was introduced and brought forward by Coach Mike Sheppard. Councilman Richard Giuditta then presented a Council proclamation to Rick Porcello, who on June 13 was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the Major League Player Draft.
Interestingly, also honored that evening were Doug Nevins, as W. Orange Citizen of the Month, and Bryan Martinez, W. Orange HS soccer standout, who was the Gatorade National Soccer Player of the Year. Never before had two Gatorade Players of the Year been named from the same town. In his remarks, Coach Nevins, a Seton Hall Prep 1991 graduate, attributed much of his success as a coach and contributor to his town to his education and athletic participation at The Prep.

RICK PORCELLO
named
GATORADE
NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

On June 1 in Seton Hall Prep's Giblin Auditorium, before an after school crowd of 600, representatives of Gatorade presented their National Player of the Year award to Seton Hall Prep pitcher Rick Porcello.
Gatorade's POY program director Rachel Mellot noted that this award distinguishes Rick as the top player from among the 470,000 athletes that play baseball in America!  She also noted, "the Gatorade POY award is unique in that its recipients must be more than just great athletes... 'the very best' means athletes who excel off the field as well"   noting Rick's 3.94 GPA, and his exceptional character. Additionally she noted the impressive list of players who have won Gatorade's Player of the Year award in previous years: Newark Mayor Corey Booker, Alex Rodriguez, Peyton Manning, Emmitt Smith and LeBron James, among many other stars in 10 sports during the past 22 years.
In TV interviews afterwards, Rick remarked how "just being mentioned along with athletes like them is an awesome thought."
Chad Konecky of RISE magazine, the coordinator of the selection process, described how input on nominees for the award is sought from dozens of local, regional and national prep baseball experts, scores of members of local media, coaches, referees and state athletic association officials.
Rick's stats, with possibly three games remaining in the season include an 8-0 record, 0.63 ERA, 96 strikeouts and a mere 11 walks in 56 innings, and a 77-pitch perfect game in the Greater Newark Tournament against Newark Academy on May 12. Notably, he is also batting a gaudy .470, with 10 homeruns.
The event featured Rick's response, as well as remarks by NJ Senate President Richard Codey, Prep headmaster Msgr. Michael Kelly, and Prep baseball coach Mike Shepard.
