At the Penn Relays, on Saturday...
The Prep turned in one of the state's most impressive feats ever, by qualifying for TWO Championship of America races on the final day at Penn. They became the first NJ team to qualify for both the 4x400 and the 4x800 Championship races in the same Penn Relays meet since Trenton in 1978.

The Hall's 4x400 team of Patrick Altema [50.1], Patrick Blackie [49.5], Bill Buzaid [49.3] and Chuck Curry [48.9] finished second to Paterson Kennedy in their heat, running 3:17.88. It took a blistering 45.9 by Shaquan Brown of Kennedy to nip Curry at the tape for the win by .03 sec. Five hours later the Pirates ran 3:18.39, with Bernie Laurendan turning in a 49.6 on the 3rd leg in place of Blackie.

In the 4x800 Championship, Seton Hall's legs were Led Smith [2:00.3] Patrick Muldoon [2:03.5] Brian Trembley [2:02.2] and Lauredan [2:01.1]. The 4x800 final preceeded the 4x400 final by only two hours.

Bernie Lauredan [at right in photo] led off with a 1:56.4 and Bill Buzaid [l] turned in a 1:57.5 third leg to help the Pirates 4x800 team turn in a 7:52.18, good for 4th in their heat, and 8th overall, placing them in the Championship of America race on Saturday. Junior Pat Muldoon turned in a 1:59.1 and Brian Trembley a 1:59.2 on the anchor. The 12-team Championship of America race is scheduled for Sat. at 2:55 pm. Their heat was won by Syosset of Long Island, whose 7:48.8 was a meet best, and whose 7:42.24 indoors in February was a national record.

The Prep's team will eye the school record of 7:47.1 set in 1975.
