BULLETIN
SETON HALL PREP NAMES JOHN FINNEGAN NEW FOOTBALL COACH
Msgr. Michael E. Kelly, Headmaster of Seton Hall Preparatory School, announced on Tuesday that the new Head Football Coach at the West Orange school will be John T. Finnegan, currently Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair, NJ. The Caldwell resident has been head of the football program at  Immaculate Conception since 1986, compiling a 109-58-2 record, with five Colonial Hills Conference Championships, as well as NJ Parochial Group I State Championships in 1994 and 1998. His last 10 teams at Immaculate Conception have qualified for the state football playoffs. More than 50 of his players at the Group I school have gone on to play college football, 16 of them on full scholarships. Since 1984 he has also been Head Indoor Track Coach, and, since 1994, Head Outdoor Girls Track and Field Coach.
In announcing Finnegan's appointment, Msgr.Kelly remarked, "For 25 years I have followed the success and admired the dedication of John as an educator, administrator and football and track coach. I know he will instill this same spirit of dedication in the Prep's students, on and off the field."
Acknowledging his long tenure with the program at Immaculate Conception, Finnegan said, "It's sad to leave, but I'm excited by the opportunity; Seton Hall Prep is a premier program in Essex County and in the state. I'm thrilled."
Finnegan's career includes recognition by the Newark Star-Ledger as Essex County Football Coach of the 1990's, Essex County Track Coach of the Year [1998] by the Essex County Track Coaches Association, Star-Ledger Indoor Track Coach of the Year [1986].
A 1982 graduate of Montclair State University, and currently finishing his Masters work at Caldwell College, Finnegan will join the Social Studies Department at Seton Hall Prep.
Finnegan's appointment fills the vacancy created when current Seton Hall Prep Football Coach Eric Gobble resigned his position last week to return home with his wife and new son to Virginia, to direct the Admissions Office and head the Football program at Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond.
Gobble, a teacher in the History Department, has been a part of the Pirate football program for the past five years, the last three as Head Coach. During his time as Head Coach the Prep has compiled a 23-12 record and won two Iron Hills Conference football championships. Several of his players recently signed on to play with Division I programs—Mike McAndrew [Columbia University], Anthony Yepez [Hofstra], and from this year's team,  Andrew Callender [Boston College], Brian Ligas [Siena], Pat McCrossan [University of Maine] and Alex Buzbee [Georgetown].
