Two Prep Stalwarts Honored by the Seton Hall Prep's Fathers Club. On Sunday, November 5, at Seton Hall Prep's Annual Communion Breakfast, the Fathers Club presented the Thomas A. Reynolds Award
to Tom McCormick '49 and Fr. Bill Melillo The event was held at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, attended by a gathering of 250. The presentation of the organization's most cherished award marks the
extraordinary and long-standing contributions the two men have made over the years to the welfare and development of Seton Hall Prep students, in all phases of their life at school.
The late Thomas A. Reynolds (left), SHP Class of 1948 and President of the Seton Hall Prep Fathers Club for two terms, from 1970-73, exemplified for the Prep
Community the spirit of industry and involvement in the interests of young people that the school has fostered throughout its nearly 150-year history. Following his
untimely death in 1979 the Fathers Club established in his name an award to be presented annually to men and women from among the Prep Community who 1) exemplify the Christian
tradition in every facet of their lives 2) consistently show themselves to be devoted to the welfare of the
student body at Seton Hall Prep and 3) have consistently remained active members of the Prep Community, giving of themselves by a commitment beyond the usual degree of involvement.
Following Tom's untimely death, a group of his friends, many of them Prep and Fathers Club alumni, established the Thomas A. Reynolds Scholarship Fund
. Since its creation in 1979, this fund has distributed close to $600,000 to nearly 100 students.
<<<<< Mary Ellen Reynolds Sullivan, Richard Reynolds '84, Fr. Bill Melillo, Tom McCormick '49. Headmaster Msgr. Michael E. Kelly '57, Fathers Club President Joe Brower
Tom McCormick—is a 1949 graduate of the Prep and has remained involved in several capacities
ever since, as an alum, as a father of Michael '78 and Brian '82, and as a grandfather of Michael Jr. '08.
Tom graduated from Pace University in 1953 with an accounting degree. While at Pace, he played basketball and was co-captain of the team. He was inducted into the Pace University Hall of
Fame in 2001. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-55 with a rank of 1st lieutenant and platoon leader.
Professionally, Tom has been a public accountant and chief financial officer for several corporations. He started his own CPA firm in 1978, and retired in 2003.
While his sons Michael and Brian were at the Prep, Tom was deeply involved in the Prep Fathers Club.
His main contribution was his involvement with the organization's Car Raffle, their main fundraiser both then and still to this day. He was a regular attendee at Prep Fathers Club meetings and made himself
available to assist in any way he was needed. Long time Fathers Club member Pat O'Callaghan remembers Tom as always being there to do whatever had to be done.
Tom is married to his wife Nora for 48 years, they have three children, Michael, Brian, and daughter Kathleen, and four grandchildren.Rev. William Melillo—
Fr. Bill, as most of us know him, has just celebrated his 40th year in service to the people of the Archdiocese of Newark. He was ordained a priest on May 28, 1966. Since 1978, he has been
assigned to The Prep, some 28 years. Initially, Fr. Bill was a member of our Religious Studies Department,
and became its chairman in 1984. In 1989 he joined the Guidance Department and remained there until his
retirement this past June. In addition to his Prep duties, he has served as a weekend assistant at both Our Lady of Lourdes in West Orange and Our lady of the Lake in Verona.
Fr. Bill enjoys spending time with his nieces and nephews, and his brothers Nicholas and Anthony and
their wives. His nephew Nicholas graduated from the Prep in 1988. He enjoys classical music, movies, Broadway musicals, cooking, baking, and gardening. He has a "green thumb" and is a gourmet chef.
Ask any Prep student who was lucky enough to have Fr. Bill as a guidance counselor, and you will very
quickly realize what a special, kind, caring person he is. Even after his retirement, he intends to continue
his priestly ministry with volunteer service both here at The Prep and as a weekend assistant at our Lady of the Lake.
Tom Reynolds, Class of 1948, was the first of only three men in the modern era of the Prep Fathers Club
to serve two terms as President and an early contributor to its growth through active involvement. Tom was the organizer of the first Sports and Activities Journal,
which in the seventies and eighties was one of the Fathers Club's major fund raisers. Tom showed a unique dedication to The Prep and was a believer in the important role the Fathers Club plays at Seton Hall.
Active as a student at the Prep, his loyalty grew during the years his four sons, Tom '72, Robert '74,
John '75, and Richard '84, attended the Prep. On March 30, 1979, Tom Reynolds was killed while jogging near his home in North Caldwell. As a consequence of this tragedy, Seton Hall Prep lost a friend and
supporter. REYNOLDS AWARD 2005
Emmelyn Mailley began her nursing career at St. Vincent's
Hospital, New York City, in 1965. After earning her R.N. at the hospital, she remained there until 1969. After taking time off while raising her two sons, she resumed her nursing career on
the night shift at St. Mary's Hospital in Orange from 1970-1985 enabling her to be home to raise the family during the day and work at night.
When the Prep moved from the South Orange campus to West Orange in 1985, Mailley became the school nurse. She applies her exceptionally professional manner in taking care of a regular
flow of Prep students in and out of her office for the everyday bumps, bruises and upset stomachs found in any school, at the same time demonstrating her genuine care and concern for Prep
students which is quickly recognized and appreciated by everyone in the building. She is married to her husband John for
forty years, who served as the President of our Fathers Club during the 1983-84 academic year. They have two sons, John '84 and Robert '87 and six grandchildren.
George Hayes, father of two Prep alumni, Andrew '05 and
George '02, lives with wife Joanne in St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Bloomfield. The Chicago native works in media planning and buying for one of the world's largest global
marketing companies, Universal McCann. His 30-year career there has enabled him to call home New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles. His involvement at SHP has long exceeded the time of
his sons' tenure at the Prep— he was President of the Fathers Club in 2000-01, has chaired both the Mercedes Raffle and the Fathers Club Auction, which together annually bring in excess of
$80,000 to the Prep, all earmarked for the benefit of the school's students. His quiet involvement over so many years has earned him of "lifer" within the Prep Community.
Most Reverend Arthur Serratelli, '61, Bishop of Paterson was the guest speaker.
Bishop Serratelli was recently appointed by the Vatican as Chair of the Committee on Doctrine for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. In June Bishop he will celebrate the 45th
anniversary of his graduation from Seton Hall Prep, and will deliver an address as Alumnus of the Year at Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2006.
