COMING APRIL 26-28
On April 26, 27 and 28 Godspell returns to the Seton Hall Prep stage,
after a decade-long hiatus. Directed by Joseph Neglia, who began his association with Prep musicals in 1976 and who took over as director in 1987, Godspell is based on the Gospel of St. Matthew. It originated in 1970 as
a John-Michael Tebelak master's thesis project at Carnegie Mellon. With the score's lyrics coming mostly from the Episcopal Hymnal and music by the student cast members, the show hit the stage for a ten-performance run
at New York's experimental venue Cafe LaMama in February of 1971. There it caught the eye of Broadway producers Edgar Lansbury and Joseph Beruh, who decided to open it on Broadway. They hired Carnegie-Mellon alumnus
Stephen Schwartz to write a new song score, still based on the Episcopal Hymnal. The new songs included a variety of musical styles—pop, folk rock, gospel and vaudeville. The original production was
designed for a small ensemble and included an on-stage band. How the intimacy of the original adapts itself to the enormous Prep stage, where the usual musical cast and crew number close to one hundred, will be
interesting to watch. Director Neglia sees Godspell as a perfect vehicle for this year's company, coming off of last spring's musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."I wanted something that would allow the younger kids from the children's chorus of Joseph to come join us again," Neglia observed. "It is interesting that since I began
directing the musical we did not repeat a show until 2005." That year, Man of LaMancha was the first repeated show, having been performed in 1994. Then in 2006, Joseph was revived, first performed in 1995. This year the
re-run trilogy is completed with Godspell, originally performed at SHP in 1996. The production features Evan Lee '07 in the role of Jesus, with Peter D'Angelo '08 as Judas. Both Lee and D'Angelo starred
in the SHP fall production of Moon Over Buffalo. Other SHP ensemble members and soloists include: Jerry
Bruno '08, Dan Doyle '07, Chris Janish '10, Dan Mainardi '09, Dave Malkiewich '07, Corey Masklee '10, Nick Mikula '07, Travis Miller '07, Anthony Papetti '07, Joe Spiotta '09, Matt Spencer '07 and Harold Turner '07.
The female members of the cast come from West Orange HS, Lacordaire, St. Dominic's Academy Jersey City and from Mount Saint Dominic Academy.
