Links to SHP Teachers' Websites For its entire history the Prep has offered a strong college preparatory curriculum, putting its students in touch with a
spectrum of academic experiences, from a "traditional" core of subjects to give them a solid foundation, to a wide variety of electives that respond to individual interests,
talents and curiosities. A strength of the Prep experience continues to be the strong personal relationships forged between students and teachers—the educational experience goes well beyond the walls and time frame of
the class. And while it is recognized that academic talent is not always bestowed in equal measures, high expectations and standards are in place for all students, not just the most blessed.
As a member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, Seton Hall Prep has targeted specific areas for improvement as part of the ongoing Middle States accreditation process.
In the School's first cycle of the Accreditation for Growth program which ran from 1998 through 2003, the three major goals were
- The expansion of Effective and efficient use of technology across all instructional areas.
Proceeding from a belief that technology for its own sake is a hollow gesture, a newly formed
Department of Computers and Technology expanded offerings in computer programming and video production, while emphasizing the application of appropriate technologies to all areas,
from word processing to Internet solutions to multimedia presentations.
- Elevation of "service learning" to a defining part of Prep life for all students
. This has advanced the notion of "community service" to a core experience of Catholic teachings of
social justice. The experience of service has been brought to the classroom for reflection and analysis —to tie together issues from social studies, literature, science and mathematics with life situations.
- Expansion of the number and expectation level of college level Advanced Placement offerings
. The impact of the Prep's "best" on the academic environment of the entire school can not be
overstated. Not only do these students honor themselves and benefit from their achievement in these courses, but they also serve as models for the Student Body and bequeath a legacy of
excellence for those who follow. Prep students so-qualified will strive to join "the best of the best." In May of 2004, 112 students took 223 Advanced Placement Tests in 16 different areas
with an average score of 3.28 on a scale of 5.
In the current 2004-2010 cycle, the School has added two further goals:
- An improvement of writing skills across the curriculum. The faculty has expanded and coordinated the writing assignments for all freshmen and sophomores in English, History, and
Theology. Class size has been capped at 18 in these areas to enable the faculty involved to grade all the written work, provide individual feedback to the students, and continue to
maintain all other aspects of these curricula. While the emphasis in this program has been in these three departments in the first two year, the program involves faculty from all academic
areas and is designed to be continued on a more individualized basis into junior and senior years with an emphasis on the new writing component of the SAT and with the school's
traditional program of a major research work in Senior year.
- An increase in student involvement in programs for spiritual development. This program is building a new retreat program for all students, seeking direct student participation in the
spiritual programs at the school including retreats and liturgy, and continuing to make community service" centered on Catholic teachings of social justice part of the core Prep experience.
