Jason Viera chose a most original way of completing his Junior AP English Project on "Autumn" Introducing it to the class he wrote:

"I was inspired to do this quilt when I observed the AIDS quilt during Sunday Mass. At first I could not decide how I would go about designing the project, but I drew upon my creativity and came up with a couple of ideas. The first was to crochet the entire quilt, but when I checked with my grandmother, a retired seamstress, she said it would take, oh, say, TWO YEARS!!!.

So I abandoned that effort and engaged in the making of a type of collage quilt. I took an autumn type blanket and sewed on a Thanksgiving tablecloth, to serve as a background for the piece. The autumn colors of this added a slightly more vivid effect to the overall solemn nature of the quilt.

After that I created four sections to categorize various elements that make autumn the majestic season that it is."

  • Point at the panels on Jason's wall hanging...

"The HARVEST panel is the most salient of all autumn aspects. In this panel I chose green as a background because it is the final reaping of Nature's fruits. The cornucopia is a conspicuous symbol of these last perennial fruits."

"Booooo! Spooky goblins, cackling witches and grotesque jack-o-lanterns are the famous attributes of this holiday. The purpose of this panel was to convey my affinity for pumpkin picking and dressing up in a frightening costume. This is an exciting holiday for all who are involved, especially when the children ask elatedly at every doorstep, "Trick or treat?"

"The Thanksgiving panel is a dedication to one of the most revered holidays of the year. Beyond the thrills of a Thanksgiving football game or the panoply of outstanding television programs, Thanksgiving is a peaceful time in the year when all of us are thankful for our gifts. The turkey is a standard dish of the holiday, and in fact, it was the only food to be eaten by the pragmatic Pilgrims. The color of this panel is served up as a cranberry sauce background."

"The panel that comprises the Ecclesiastes passage is the epitome of the meaning of autumn in our lives. A seed is planted in the spring in hopes that it will come to awesome fuition. We see the seed sprouting in the summer and the results always exceed our expectations. The autumn sees the maturity of that seed and we realize that all our dreans end in success if we maintain our efforts."
