Melvin's Advanced Placement Art Project involved a series of self-portraits.

Completed using acrylic on canvas, the portraits represent a developing sense of self-awareness, moving from a concentration on "likeness" to a portrayal of character and personality.

Melvin has been accepted at Pratt Institute, and has decided to pursue Architecture there in September.

This was my first experience 
with self-portrature using 
acrylic paint. My aim in this portrait 
was primarily
Though there have been various 
interpretations, my goal in this portrait 
was to capture emotion and an aura of
uncertainty. It's what most of us
[SHP seniors] were feeling at the time.
This is the second work of the
I decided to get a little more personal
with this portrait, adding my glasses
and my favorite cap. The background
was an experiment with color mixing
that I thought was pretty successful.
This is a preliminary sketch that 
I keep because of its boldness. I use
it as a reminder of how confident
I should be and how free I should feel
as I work.
