10.17.05
After a couple of weeks of work and team building in their homerooms, the freshmen and their
peer leaders were ready to put their newly developed spirit to the test. The Annual Freshman Field Day features relays, football and volleyball games, a lunch and a tug-of-war, all geared towards the accumulation of
points and the pizza party they could gain for the winning homeroom.

Seton Hall Prep is the oldest Catholic college preparatory school in New Jersey. Founded in
1856, in Florham Park, with but five students, a Seton Hall education for a long time was a continual process beginning in grammar school and continuing through college. Only after the passage of about a half century
and a move to South Orange, did the college curriculum separate from the preparatory curriculum. And then in 1985 The Prep left its spot on the University campus, for its own, off Northfield Avenue in West Orange.
With its history beginning even before Abe Lincoln was President and before a railroad had crossed the nation, Seton Hall has witnessed and participated in the complete pageant of American History. The assembly of
nearly 1300 was welcomed by Headmaster Msgr. Michael Kelly, as well as Archdiocese of Newark Vicar General and Chancellor Very Rev. Robert E. Emory; President of West Orange Township Council Robert Parisi, and SHP Board
Member Richard Merklinger '65. Six students
recounted for the gathering the chronology of Seton Hall Prep in the context of American history: Jarrod Schlenker portrayed Abe Lincoln [who had not yet run for president when Seton Hall was founded in 1856, far right

the role of Chicago prelate Joseph Cardinal Bernardin. To conclude the ceremony, Msgr. Kelly accompanied the Student Council to the flag pole to raise the newly designed anniversary flag.

09.08.05Two-hundred seventy-five newest members of the SHP community showed up rarin' to go on
September 8, and quickly got a week's worth of questions and answers packed into a couple of hours of work with their Peer Leaders. How's this schedule work? Where's my locker? Do I need all these books? How will I
learn all these names? Where does my bus leave from? Where do we eat? What's the Dean of Men do? All these queries rushed to the fore, and seemed quite insurmountable in the first minutes, but thanks to the
experience and anticipation of their senior leaders, most all the answers were in evidence by the time everyone headed home in the afternoon, ready to get set for the first real full day of school on Friday.

09.05.05Every school counts on its student leaders to rise to an important position within the
student body, to direct the school towards the positive accomplishments that everyone looks for during the year. Seton Hall Prep has acknowledged over the last decade that the necessary leadership qualities are best
developed in individuals when some guidance and practice is provided. Consequently each August the 40 seniors chosen for the Peer Leadership Program spend a 3-day retreat at the Fairview YMCA Camp working on the
team-building and problem-solving skills they will employ during the year in carrying out their principal charge—that of shepherding the freshman students through their first year at The Prep. Two-man teams of Peer
Leaders will moderate 18 freshman homerooms during the year, lending their skills towards helping the frosh get to know each other, as well as a completely new education and social environment. Over the past ten years
this program has proved most valuable in making the newest Prepsters feel welcome and comfortable at the school. The program rightfully deserves part of the credit for the dramatic rise in the percentage of freshmen who
elect to continue their careers at The Prep follwoing their first year. last year's Peer Leadership retreat >>> |
