COMMENCEMENT WEEKEND JUNE 3,4 2007
The Baccalaureate Mass and Awards
Ceremony, held on Saturday evening June 2 the night before graduation, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, brought together close to 2000 students, family members, friends and faculty to honor and
to offer thanksgiving for the accomplishments of the Class of 2007. The about to graduate seniors gathered in the quadrangle in front of the massive granite building while preparations were under way for the celebration
of the Mass. Principal celebrant was Headmaster Msgr. Michael Kelly, joined by Fr. Joseph Wortmann '51, Rev. Stephen Kilcarr, Rev. William Melillo, and Msgr. Richard Groncki '58. Awards for exemplary performance in 28
academic disciplines were presented to seniors, as well as a number other achievement awards, [see posting on the
Celebration of Excellence]
including (photos in gallery, left) the Rev, William Giblin Award for Outstanding Participants in the Activities Program, to Evan Lee and Nicholas Mikula; and the Msgr. William Daly '38 Award, to Frederick A. Porcello III, name the Outstanding Senior in the Athletic Program.
As is tradition, Commencement Exercises stepped off at precisely 11:58 am to the sounds of the bagpipers announcing the impending procession. The
Brass Ensemble followed with Pomp and Circumstance as the Anniversary Class of 1957, the Faculty and the 226 seniors processed into Walsh Auditorium. The graduation of the Prep's 147th
graduating class was celebrated in a manner not seen before in New Jersey secondary school history. The Class of 2007 Commencement Exercises brought to a close the school's Sesquicentennial celebration and
acknowledged the 25th
anniversary of Msgr. Michael E. Kelly's headmastership. The latter event, and the extraordinary contribution that Msgr. Kelly has made to the growth, stability and prestige of the school, were also commemorated with the presentation by Board of Trustees Chairman John B. Murray '59, Esq. '57 of a specially commissioned Sesquicentennial Medallion to him. Topping off the day, Msgr. Kelly joined with other members of his 1957 Seton Hall Prep graduating class in celebrating the 50
th
anniversary of their Seton Hall graduations. In keeping with the occasion, joining the celebration on stage were Archdiocese of Newark Superintendant of Schools Rev. Kevin Hanbury (former faculty), and Prep Board of Trustees members M. Richard Merklinger '65, Drew Beifus H'92 and David L. Flood '84 [photo gallery, top left].
Keying on the tradition that is such a large part of the Prep experience, Msgr. Kelly named close to two score of fathers, grandparents and uncles of graduating seniors. Director of Institutional Advancement Jason
Makarow '99 introduced the members of the Class of 1957 who, with the headmaster, were celebrating the 50th
anniversary of their graduations. Msgr. Kelly also made special acknowledgement of Assistant Headmaster Walter McMahon, who is about to retire from that post, and of retiring Track Coach Mike Mielko, whose team the day before won the Non-Public state track championship. Highlighting the event was the presentation to the 1500 guests and the senior class of Nicholas Mikula as the recipient of the Vincent A. McIntee Award for Extraordinary Service, and Eric W. Bergman, the recipient of the Archbishop Thomas A. Boland Award, the Most Representative Setonian.
The bestowal of diplomas and the singing of the Alma Mater closed the ceremony, followed by pictures and farewells. |
